Preventing HPV

Abstaining from sex is the best way to avoid HPV. Being in a monogamous relationship will help prevent HPV. The virus may still be active, but it has been proven that people can become immune to a particular virus strain shared between monogamous partners.

Use a condom. While this is not 100% effective, if used properly to cover skin-to-skin areas, this can prevent the spread or contraction of HPV.

Vaccines are available to prevent HPV especially when taken early enough. The vaccine is recommended for people between the ages of 9-26 years old. See HPV Vaccine Approved for more details.
